Forms of Opiate Abuse
Opiates come in various forms and are administered in all sorts of ways. Some opiate abusers begin by taking more than a prescribed dose of a narcotic painkiller such as OxyContin or Vicodin. They might be genetically predisposed to a dependency on opioids and crave the drug after medicinal exposure to it. Others might be exposed to the street drug heroin. Heroin typically comes in a powder form and is sold in bags, similar to cocaine or marijuana. In the eastern part of the United States, heroin powder is usually a white or an off-white color, while in the western part of the United States, heroin is a sticky black tar. Most new heroin users do not inject the drug because of the fear disgrace involved with self-injection. They might begin by smoking or snorting the drug, doubting that this will lead to addiction. Pill abusers might crush the pills into a fine powder that can be then snorted or smoked. The powdered form of any opioid can be dissolved and heated to create a liquid. The liquid can then be injected. Abusers will typically inject the drug when taking a pill orally, snorting the drug and smoking the drug no longer produces the desired effect. The injected form of an opiate will produce a more powerful high. There are two forms of opiate injections: (1) skin popping where the opiate solution is injected into layers of the skin and (2) mainlining where the opioid goes directly to the vein. Effects of the drug are felt within moments and can last for up to a few hours.
